In the weather lab, you choose the conditions over Downtown Los Angeles. Compare the same view in sunshine, haze, wind or rain. The selected weather is a simulation.
Choose your own view
Drag to rotate the city and use the mouse wheel to zoom. On a phone, rotate with one finger and pinch with two fingers to change the distance.
Use the place selector to move between landmarks. The compass points north and the fullscreen symbol expands the scene. Open More 3D controls for the additional functions; Pause animation stops the movement.
Your weather experiment
The timeline shows the available next 48 hours in Los Angeles local time. Now returns to the current time. Tomorrow and Day after tomorrow offer further times where the forecast is available.
Live weather uses the latest available data. For later times you see a forecast. Weather details include the values and their update time; the scene is not a weather camera.
Tour combines places and weather patterns; Film plays a prepared sequence. Live weather returns to the available weather data. Use the forecast to plan your time outdoors.
Behind the scene
Weather data comes via Open-Meteo. Sun and moon positions are calculated for Los Angeles and the selected time. People, traffic and palms are animated; their movement responds to the weather.
The amount of water shown in the Los Angeles River channel is an illustrative model setting. It does not represent a measured river level or a flood forecast. Official warnings are available from the National Weather Service.
Building footprints and terrain are prepared for the city model, missing heights are supplemented and details are simplified. Open Licence for the geodata sources, processing notes and terms of use. The source package can also be downloaded there.
