Live
Watch the light move across rooftops and streets between City Hall and Bunker Hill. In the 3D model you can compare the same view at different times. Clouds and precipitation follow the available weather data.
Choose your own view
Drag to rotate the city and use the mouse wheel to zoom. On a phone, rotate with one finger and pinch with two fingers to change the distance.
Use the place selector to move between landmarks. The compass points north and the fullscreen symbol expands the scene. Open More 3D controls for the additional functions; Pause animation stops the movement.
Now, later and freely chosen
The timeline shows the available next 48 hours in Los Angeles local time. Now returns to the current time. Tomorrow and Day after tomorrow offer further times where the forecast is available.
Live weather uses the latest available data. For later times you see a forecast. Weather details include the values and their update time; the scene is not a weather camera.
Choose Demo to enter the weather lab. Sunshine, rain, thunderstorms, snow, fog and gales can be selected freely. Your choice applies to the experiment; it does not change a weather forecast.
Behind the scene
Weather data comes via Open-Meteo. Sun and moon positions are calculated for Los Angeles and the selected time. People, traffic and palms are animated; their movement responds to the weather.
The amount of water shown in the Los Angeles River channel is an illustrative model setting. It does not represent a measured river level or a flood forecast. Official warnings are available from the National Weather Service.
Building footprints and terrain are prepared for the city model, missing heights are supplemented and details are simplified. Open Licence for the geodata sources, processing notes and terms of use. The source package can also be downloaded there.
