Weather data and sources

This website shows everything that is available in weather data for Hannover. So that it is clear where each number comes from, here are the sources in detail:

  • Forecast (temperature, feels-like temperature, precipitation, rain probability, wind and gusts, cloud cover, air pressure, humidity, dew point, visibility, sunshine, UV index, thunderstorm potential, snow and freezing level, radiation, soil temperature and soil moisture, upper-air data): Open-Meteo (open-meteo.com), licensed under CC BY 4.0. Open-Meteo combines the ICON models of the German Weather Service, IFS of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), GFS of the US agency NOAA, GEM of Environment Canada, ARPEGE and AROME of Météo-France, and the models of the UK Met Office (UKMO) and the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).
  • Precipitation in 15-minute steps and lightning potential: ICON-D2 model of the German Weather Service, obtained via Open-Meteo.
  • Model comparison and ensemble forecasts (uncertainty band): Open-Meteo.
  • Air quality (particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide, ozone, sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide, ammonia, dust) and pollen forecast: Open-Meteo Air Quality API based on the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS).
  • Current readings of the weather station: Bright Sky (brightsky.dev) based on station data of the German Weather Service (DWD).
  • Official weather warnings and the pollen hazard index: German Weather Service (dwd.de, open data).
  • Written weather report: generated automatically with OpenAI (model GPT-5.6) from exactly these data. The text is machine-generated and not editorially reviewed.
  • Interactive weather maps: Windy (windy.com), only loaded after explicit consent.
  • Sun and moon times: calculated astronomically. Photos: Adobe Stock and our own pictures, the credit is shown next to each image.

Weather data are forecasts and can change at short notice. In hazardous situations, only the official guidance of the German Weather Service is authoritative. Liability for decisions made on the basis of the data shown is excluded.

And apart from that

f2weather is a labour of love from Linden. We actually build websites for other people, but at some point we wanted to know for ourselves whether the evening at the Maschsee would stay dry. So we collected all the weather data there is for Hannover, talked an AI into writing an honest report from it, and rebuilt the town hall in 3D on the side. If it rains anyway: that was the weather, not us. Praise, bugs and wishes are welcome at [email protected].
